Stop Guessing.
Start Protecting.
Some firms do bowties. Some firms do ICAM Investigations. Very few blend the thinking, and even fewer approach control effectiveness the way we do. That integration is the foundation of Barrier Intelligence.
Barrier Intelligence
from learning to protection.
Most companies treat incident investigations and risk assessments as separate disciplines - one looks backward, the other looks forward. Barrier Intelligence integrates both into a single operating discipline. We teach how to look for which controls matter most and evaluate their effectiveness, then use what incidents reveal to sharpen the barriers and understand how barriers degraded.
Built on two proven methodologies - Bowtie Risk assessment and ICAM incident investigations - the program teaches participants how to move fluidly between them, closing the loop between organizational learning and systematic prevention.

PROGRAM ARCHITECTURE
01
FOUNDATIONS
1 Day
Integrated introduction to both frameworks. What is a bow-tie, what are controls, what does control effectiveness look like, and how does it relate to leadership and investigations.
02
RISK - BowTie Fundamentals
2 Days
Deep dive into the bowtie methodology. Hazard and Threat ID, Consequence Modeling, Critical Control Management principles, Control Degradation, Human and Organizational Factors, etc.
03
CONTROL EFFECTIVENESS - Risk Advanced
2 Days
Specific training in Critical Control Design and Performance Testing.
What are control design standards, control operating standards, and control effectiveness testing. How does it work in the real world.
04
ASSURANCE - Risk Advanced
2 Days
Evaluating the systems that support risk management. Critical Control Verification Program including field protocols, assurance mapping, escalation, system performance assessments, etc.
05
INTEGRATED INVESTIGATIONS
3 Days
Integrating ICAM with Bowtie. Using a systems lens to understand control failures and control degrading by using ICAM causal mapping with Bowties. Causal analysis back to the bowtie graphic.
The learning Arc
What is the system?
FOUNDATIONS
What are the controls?
RISK
Do the controls work?
CONTROL EFFECTIVENESS
Are the controls performing consistently?
ASSURANCE
What happened when they didn't work?
INVESTIGATIONS
We are more obsessed with finding what works than whats proper.
Our team blends decades of Bowtie experience with decades of investigations trainings to pull together an efficient program.
Generic Training:
- Bowtie taught as a documentation exercise
- Investigation is timeline focused
- Two disconnected courses delivered separately
- Generic case studies, no operational context
- Generic consultants who know the process, not application
BARRIER INTELLIGENCE:
- Bowtie as a living risk management tool
- Investigation as a learning and prevention mechanism
- One integrated discipline across five tiers of training
- Tailored to client hazard profile and operations
- Consultants who worked for major organizations and managed major hazard risks.
